Parents Weakened? Yeah, My Parents Were Weakened By The 2008 Recession!

SUBURBAN AMERICA — As Boston College’s Parents Weekend approaches, everyone on campus is excited to combine day drinking and football with childhood trauma and familial issues. Whether it be grabbing some cash from mom’s wallet or Xanax from dad’s toiletry bag, everybody has a reason to celebrate the upcoming weekend’s festivities.

Reese Hessian (LSOE ’25) shared her palpable anticipation for the weekend. “I’m like excited to see them, but things haven’t really ever recovered in our house since 2008,” Hessian said.

Hessian and her family were drastically affected by the housing crisis of the late 2000s. Her father, a sketchy mortgage lender, was allegedly responsible for the utter decimation of housing prices in the New York City suburban area.

“He still feels really bad for what he did,” Hessian remarked. “Like a lot of people lost their homes and that sucked for them.”

Diving a bit deeper, the Classic found that the Hessian family’s current Short Hills, NJ, home was bought in 2009 for $8.9 million. Commenting on that, Hessian said, “Well we all felt really bad and we were super sad, so we thought we kind of deserved an upgrade to maybe brighten our spirits.”

Their home features a tennis court, a pool, a billiards room, some “out of commission” medieval torture equipment, and an entire AMC theater with reclining seats. “Yeah the theater’s really nice,” Hessian said. “But like my dad still won’t let us watch The Big Short. Like, dad, it’s been like fifteen years and Christian Bale is hot in it, get over it.”
