GABELLI HALL — Alice Thornington (MCAS ’27) and Layneigh Mae Longhorn (MCAS ’27) hail from completely different corners of the country. Thornington comes from Greenwich, Connecticut, while Longhorn is a southern belle from the Lone Star State. They are forever grateful that Boston College brought them together. While they might be different, the two self-identify as “sisters from different misters.”

Longhorn decided to go all out this Halloween. To acquire all the parts of her costume, Longhorn went to four different Spirit Halloweens, two Targets, Best Buy, Whole Foods, St. Mary’s Chapel, and the men’s football locker room. A study by The New England Classic suggests that Longhorn spent approximately 172 hours and emitted 2.1 metric tons of carbon dioxide. In total she acquired seventeen different parts for her spooky look.

When asked about her roommate’s costume, Thornington said, “The amount of sleep she lost over her ‘slutty Martha Speaks’ costume is genuinely outrageous. Her RHA family decided to go as cartoons, not slutty cartoons, just cartoons. Layneigh just felt the need to let everyone know that Martha was in heat and ready to mingle by wearing as little fabric as possible.”

Midterm season is extra exciting this year given the federal midterm elections. Across campus students from a variety of geographic backgrounds have cast votes. The rise of mail-in ballots allows students from across the country to cast their ballots. Talarico faces some old, pen-stealing, white, Republican dude for one of Texas’s seats in the Senate. Additionally, homegirl Hinojosa is running against some anti-woman, old, white, Republican dude for governor. Both races are incredibly close, making Texas one of the must-watch states this midterm election season.

When asked if she was voting, Longhorn said “Nah, my vote doesn’t matter. Texas is red and will always be red.”

Thornington pointed out the polls that suggest the Texas races are incredibly close. In response, Longhorn cited her busy schedule as a reason for not voting. Her Google Calendar consists of hours-long scrolling blocks, multiple Res walks, at-home hibachi catering every Wednesday night, an IV drip most mornings, and classes. However, she places all her classes on Wednesdays to free up the other days. She finds local funerals and elective medical procedures to excuse her from Wednesday classes. Importantly, she dedicated 172 hours to assembling a costume with 17 different pieces.
