BOSTON COLLEGE OFFICE OF RESIDENTIAL LIFE—Boston College ResLife, amid the treacherous season of housing selection, has chosen to announce its newest solution to the onslaught of complaints this week: The Fr. Jack Butler, S.J., Houseboat Fleet.
Hoping to draw from the popularity of BC’s signature Mod Village– “Permanently temporary since 1971”–ResLife chose to build these same portable homes on the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.
“We are hoping the Fleet has a similar effect to the Mods: building a better tailgating culture,” said ResLife intern Ian Twodiep (MCAS ‘26).
Twodiep also said that he believes the Fleet will provide a new space to tailgate the hockey games, noting that fans will even be able to skate to their friends’ vessels if the weather is right!
However, in an unexpected turn of events, the Fleet’s application demographic has skewed prominently female, with a high concentration of Philosophy, Art History, and Political Science majors.
“I mean me and all the girls studied abroad in Amsterdam last spring, and it was truly life changing,” said Didi Telyaistudydabrawd (MCAS ‘25). “Like, we are all just so much more culturally adept now and we feel that the Fleet will not only make us feel so much more at home, but also allow us a space to process the loss of place that really felt like home.”
Telyaistudydabrawd notably began to sob at the culmination of this interview.
With the Fleet now installed on the Reservoir, there is notably not a BC Hockey flag in sight, nor a can of Twisted Tea floating in the waters.
However, locals say they often find empty bottles of red wine on the shores and an unmistakable odor of stroopwafels in the water’s breeze.
