FOSTER STREET — Acapella is an extremely rigorous, respected, and renowned extra-curricular here at Boston College. Each team is composed of amazing, talented individuals who really know how to carry a tune, but boy do they never shut up! Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Think of the yappiest person you know at BC, chances are they have been plagued by the acapella epidemic that spreads across campus and targets former theater kids each year. Not only do they all sing at weird times, they just never stop talking in general!

Luckily, there are a few weeks out of the year where we can all finally get some peace and quiet and don’t have to worry about being nonconsensually serenaded by a baritone. For those that have seen Pitch Perfect, you probably know that attending and winning the International Championship of Collegiate Acapella (ICCA) is the greatest honor an acapella group can accomplish. The ICCA is a very serious competition that requires months and months of training, intense choreography, and even a period of vocal rest leading up to the performance.

You heard that right, vocal rest. A whole day prior to their performance where every team member must protect their vocal chords by shutting the fuck up!

The Classic got the chance to talk– err communicate with one of the members of the team competing this weekend in the ICCA semifinals. When asked how it is even possible for her to stop talking for a whole day, Gabs O’Lot (LSED ’27) pointed to her throat and mouthed: “Sorry… vocal rest,”.

Here at The Classic we hope that everyone who has an acapella roommate can take advantage of the one day of peace you have this weekend. Feel free to play whatever song you want without worry that your roommate will overpower it. Maybe even sing in the shower without fear they will say you are off key.

At press time, Gabs O’Lot was seen belting to Unconditionally by Katy Perry.
