O’Neill Plaza Church — While at Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition at the beginning of the school year for Jesuit high schools and universities throughout the world, junior Shane McCarthy (CSOM ’18) uttered the words “and also with you” in response to Father Leahy’s “peace be with you,” signifying that he clearly hasn’t been to Mass in a while.
“We’ve been saying ‘and with your spirit’ since, what, like 2011?” questioned Sammy Hasterman (MCAS ‘17) , who has spent 18 years of her life in Catholic school. “If this were 2012, I could understand. But at this point, five years after the fact, it’s honestly kind of embarrassing. He may as well have responded in Latin.”
McCarthy, who was raised in one house with a Catholic mother and another with an atheist father, reported that he went to Mass with some of his roommates to “give this whole Catholic school thing another shot.” Growing up, he was a self-described “CEO [Christmas and Easter Only] Catholic” and celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation “to make his grandmother proud,” but had little interaction with the Catholic Church aside from those experiences. “But hey, I’m trying,” stated McCarthy.
At press time, McCarthy swore to himself that he would continue going to Mass if that cute girl from 264 Foster Street kept going, too.
