O’CONNELL HOUSE — A Campus Activities Board event gained a little more chutzpah Tuesday when hypnotist Chris Jones converted a student to Judaism.
Halfway through the show, Jones called Matthew Doyle (CSOM ‘21, BC High ‘17) up to the stage to be hypnotized. According to eyewitness reports, Jones pulled Doyle aside to give him instructions before Doyle turned to face the audience and began reciting passages from the Torah in perfect Hebrew.
Jones then placed a yarmulke on Doyle’s head and yelled “MAZEL TOV!” while smashing a glass wrapped in a napkin with his foot.
According to friends close to Doyle, he was a devout Catholic before Tuesday, and was an active member of 4Boston, Appa, and Arrupe service programs.
“I’ve known Matt since freshman year at BC High,” Doyle’s roommate Chris Fitzpatrick (CSOM ‘21) said. “Dude was an altar server all four years and literally read at every mass. I wonder if he’s told Father Shaughnessy yet.”
At press time, Doyle was seen requesting to be added to the listserv for BC Hillel.
Update, Oct. 29, 4:20 p.m.: It has been revealed that hypnotist “Chris Jones” is actually Rabbi Joseph Goldberg of Brighton, MA. His hypnotist pseudonym is maintained in the article for identification purposes.
