WALSH HALL — Sophomore Adam Rider awakened the taste buds of his 8-man Friday night with an inspired pairing of mango-flavored Juul vapor and lime Rubinoff vodka.
Rider (MCAS ‘21) is a political science major with a minor in economics, but is reconsidering his career aspirations after receiving such lofty praise for his culinary expertise.
“I’ve kinda been considering becoming a sommelier,” Rider said on Sunday. “A sommelier is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing.”
Some people, including Rider’s parents, who were previously under the impression that their son was pursuing a career in campaign management, may argue that wine pairing is an unstable and outdated industry. However, the role in fine dining today is much more specialized and informed than that of a wine waiter, and pairs nicely with a lack of marketable administrative skills.
“I have lots more pairings coming soon,” Rider said. “I just copped some tobacco pods, I think they’ll go really well with unflavored Rubi. I’ll probably expand into dab pen stuff soon, that market is growing so fast, you know?”
